An Awareness Raising Toolkit For
How Can Childhood Educators Incorporate Culturally Aware Reading Into The Classroom?
Introduction:
I am standing between the Anuenue.
Anuenue is a native Hawaiian word for a double rainbow. When I was brainstorming with my friend on how to encompass being on the outside of two cultures; both the AAPI Community, and the Queer community, she said I was between the Anuenue. I am adjacent to both. My view is "colored" by their perspectives, but I am separate from them.
It is my goal that those outside of one or both rainbows can connect with families that are part of them. In my effort to help connect those on the outside to these communities, I have selected some children's books that connect with either the AAPI community or Queer community and have crafted some possible activities to match each book. It is my hope that this can in some small way help bring teachers and families from different groups together in community and open a space for conversation.

As school is out for summer, parents, as well as teachers, might be looking for activities to do inspired by these books building cultural awareness for AA/PI Queer Youth.
